FAQ

Additional Information On High Point, Florida Tap Water

Is High Point tap water safe to drink?

High Point’s tap water has been found to contain contaminants such as bromodichloromethane and chloroform at levels significantly exceeding health guidelines, posing potential cancer risks. Additionally, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a type of PFAS chemical, was detected at concentrations 20 times higher than recommended limits.

Is High Point tap water hard?

Similar to other areas in Hernando County, High Point’s water is considered hard, containing elevated levels of calcium and magnesium. High Point, Florida, like much of the state, is situated atop the Floridan Aquifer, a limestone-rich water source that contributes to elevated mineral content in the water supply. This geological characteristic often results in hard water, which contains high levels of calcium and magnesium.

While specific data for High Point is not detailed in their water quality report, nearby cities provide insight into regional water hardness levels. For instance, Clearwater reports water hardness at 178 parts per million (ppm), and West Palm Beach at 317 ppm.

Is there PFAS in High Point tap water?

The EPA is in the process of setting new MCL (maximum contaminant levels), which range from 4 to 10 parts per trillion. In numbers, that would be 0.00000000004 for PFOA and PFOS, individually to 0.0000000001 for PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA (GenX Chemicals). Recent sampling for High Point, Florida’s water detected the presence of PFAS chemicals. The EPA has set new Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for six PFAS compounds: 4 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 ppt for PFNA, PFHxS, and GenX Chemicals. As you can see in the water quality report, many samples do not meet these standards.

Where does High Point get its tap water?

High Point sources its tap water from the Floridan Aquifer, a vast underground reservoir spanning several southeastern states. This aquifer is the primary drinking water source for most of central and northern Florida, supplying nearly 10 million people.
