FAQ
Additional Information On Clearwater, Florida Tap Water
Is Clearwater Tap Water Safe To Drink?
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has identified several contaminants in Clearwater’s water supply that exceed their health guidelines, based on data from 2014 to 2020. It’s important to note that EWG’s health guidelines are often more stringent than federal standards. These include arsenic, disinfection byproducts such as HAA5 and TTHMs. There have been samples that tested higher than the EPA’s maximum contaminant level for chlorine. There are also samples that have tested above the action level for lead. Some residents have reported issues such as a milky appearance of the water or a slippery feel during showers. During routine maintenance periods, the water treatment process may switch from chloramine to chlorine disinfection, which leads to potentially, a stronger taste or smell of your tap water.
Is Clearwater Tap Water Hard?
The most recent Clearwater Water Quality Report showed no range for hard water, but anecdotal accounts have discussed the tap water as being moderately hard to very hard.
Is There PFAS In Clearwater Water?
Recent sampling conducted at Clearwater water treatment plants detected the presence of PFAS chemicals. The EPA is in the process of setting new MCL (maximum contaminant levels), which range from 4 to 10 parts per trillion. In numbers, that would be 0.00000000004 for PFOA and PFOS, individually to 0.0000000001 for PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA (GenX Chemicals). As you can see in the water quality report, many samples do not meet these standards. Click here to learn more about our whole house PFAS filtration systems.
Does Clearwater Tap Water Have Fluoride?
Yes, fluoride adds fluoride to its water supply to help prevent tooth decay. The most recent water quality report showed a level of .52 to .66. The EPA maximum contaminant level is 4 ppm.
Where Does Clearwater Get Its Water?
Clearwater’s tap water is supplied by Tampa Bay Water, a regional utility that sources water from a blend of groundwater and surface water. The raw water—drawn from extensive underground aquifer systems (including wells tapping into the Floridan Aquifer) and surface sources such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs—is delivered to the city’s Cosme Water Treatment Plant for processing before being distributed to residents.
Do I Need A Water Softener In Clearwater?
With high hardness levels in Clearwater, it is advised for your home to have a water softener to save on appliance costs, better your clothing, improve your hair and skin, and other benefits. Learn more here.
Do I Need A Water Filter in Clearwater?
Clearwater water contains levels of arsenic, chlorine, and other disinfectant byproducts from chlorine or chloramine treatment.
